What is your favorite IIDA event and why?: I love Design Crawl!! To see the finished space after the hard work is inspiring.
What is your favorite product/service offered by your company and why?: Right now it’s Live Circuit—not just because it’s new. It has great movement and has an option to add a jolt of color.
What aspect of your company are you most proud of and why?: I am proud of Milliken’s commitment to design and development. I feel we have beautiful products. But, the fact that we can change how a space feels with the cushion backing always makes me proud.
What value do you see in being an IIDA Oregon Chapter Annual Sponsor?: IIDA provides so many great events to bring together all who work in commercial design. Not only do I find personal growth attending these, I enjoy the opportunity to see my clients on a more casual setting.
What impact do you see the IIDA Oregon Chapter having on the A&D community in Oregon?: IIDA Oregon has a unique opportunity to education and bring together the A&D community. We are all stronger as a group.
On a typical Saturday where can we find you?: There’s a good chance I’ll be repainting another room in my house. I LOVE color. My last project was my parent’s living room. I aggressively convinced my mom to paint the room a color called Borrowed Light. It looks beautiful, if I don’t say so myself.

2018 Emerging Professional Award Winner Spotlight: Sarah Sasek
The IIDA Oregon Chapter is advanced by the dedication, support and leadership of our community. We are pleased to introduce the second annual Emerging Professional Award winner, who is recognized as a junior design leader who has advanced the Interior Design profession and enriched Interior Design in Oregon. The recipient of this award has exemplified traits of knowledge, value and community – values held by the IIDA Oregon Chapter.
The winner of the 2018 Emerging Professional Award is Sarah Sasek, of Opsis Architecture. Sarah was nominated by her colleagues at Opsis, who had countless points of praise for the junior designer.
Knowledge: Sarah has built a strong foundation as an interior designer through participation in multiple projects, from initial phases of programming and design continuing through documentation, construction and the specification of furniture.  She has shown passion and desire to be knowledgeable about the entire building design, understanding the structure and systems and, actively seeking more information at each design juncture. Sarah’s research efforts and knowledge sharing have not only contributed to the projects she is working on, but also extended to the rest of the office through her growing expertise.  Sarah readily applies this knowledge to new projects, working independently with project teams where she is highly valued. Sarah has shown enthusiasm for our mission and projects, people sense and dedication.
Value: Sarah is an exceptional member of the Opsis team, bringing a level of confidence and talent to her role that has elevated her to a “go-to†junior interior designer at the firm. She combines a thorough approach to each task and brings a positive and inquisitive approach to achieving professional mastery.
Sarah is passionate about creating environments that enhance human health and wellbeing. Â As a core member of the Portland Materials Transparency Collaborative, Sarah has not only led the office to advance knowledge and resources for incorporating healthier materials into all projects, but she is also a local advocate and leader in the Portland area for greater transparency in material ingredients. Sarah recently led a hands-on biophilia workshop, inspiring each of us to channel our unique connections with nature with the goal of creating more restorative and beautiful spaces.
Sarah’s desire to improve the built environment is reflected in her dedication to our clients and her continued commitment to understanding their needs and aspirations.  Sarah’s work has steadily grown to involve working with clients from early programming through the completion of projects, consistently designing environments that are responsive to their specific needs and a reflection of their culture.  She is gifted at following through on the details that are so important to our clients. Sarah actively brings new ideas to the design process, contributing to projects she is working on as well as other projects in the studio as part of Opsis’s design review process.
Sarah’s professional growth has been remarkable, and her knowledge has been invaluable to numerous projects.  Her desire to use her talents to make the world a better place is commendable. Sarah is seen as a valuable team member by the Opsis community and we are eager to have a role in fostering Sarah’s growth and leadership at Opsis as well as her continued positive impact on the world around her.
Community:Â Sarah is a valuable member of the Opsis team, she is in-sync and responsive to others and a positive influence officewide. Â She fosters close relationships with others that contributes to a positive work environment. Sarah brings a positive attitude to her communication and is a good listener, taking time to earn respect and is gracious and yet persuasive.
For the Opsis celebration of Women’s Day, Sarah was instrumental in collecting information about the influential women who served as role models to women working at Opsis and how these role models made lasting impressions on the lives of her co-workers.  Sarah’s work on the resulting display was prominently located in the office and an instant point of pride for the entire team.

2018 Legacy Award Winner Spotlight: Sarah Weber
The IIDA Oregon Chapter is advanced by the dedication, support and leadership of our community. The Legacy Award recognizes and honors a person, company or organization whose contributions have advanced the Interior Design profession and enriched Interior Design in Oregon. The recipient of this award has exemplified traits as an advocate, mentor, design innovator and sustainable leader – values held by the IIDA Oregon Chapter.
The winner of the 2018 Legacy Award winner is Sarah Weber, IIDA, Associate Principal at BORA Architects. Sarah has been nominated multiple times by her peers, and the award comes as no surprise to those who have worked closely with her whether in the office or in a volunteer setting. She has a proven track record of tireless hard work, organization, leadership and advocacy of the Design profession. She has made her mark on the Portland landscape through her 10+ years of work as a Designer at BORA and YGH, plus her service on the IIDA Board as Oregon Chapter President.
Sarah joined the IIDA Oregon board as President Elect in 2013. It is almost unheard of for someone to join the board and immediately take on such a demanding role, but Sarah made Chapter President look easy as she overhauled the organization of the chapter, boosted participation from and added value to student members, and increased collaboration with other western state chapters.
Sarah spent countless hours in addition to her full time job at BORA overhauling the organization of the IIDA Chapter. When she came into her role, board members were still passing on outdated file folders full of outdated information for each board member role from year to year. Sarah introduced the chapter to the Google Drive, and implemented countless tools that have made it easier to pass information forward to the incoming board from year to year.  Sarah played a key role in overhauling the IIDA Oregon website, connecting it with the chapter’s various social media platforms and streamlining how content is displayed and shared.
Sarah helped found the Local Student Design Charette, where students from all Oregon design schools can participate on teams to address a design challenge. Through her increased collaboration with other Western State chapters through the Regional CLC, she helped create the Western Region Student Design Charette, which brought winning teams from the local chapter charrettes together to compete for a chance to go to Chicago for the National Student Design Charette every June. All of this was no small task – as it involved intensive planning on many levels from planning logistics on a regional scale to developing a way to finance, sponsor and fund the initiative.
These are just a few of the many amazing things Sarah accomplished during her award winning tenure as president and on the IIDA board. Meanwhile, she managed to equally contribute to her firm, BORA, working on projects in multiple sectors including education, housing and workplace. Sarah puts so much love and passion into her projects and focuses on every detail of the design. She focuses holistically on the built environment, the user, sustainability and the brand. A great example of her work is the Airbnb project in Portland. She juggled the design of this award winning project – one that employees often call an extension of their “home†– all while IIDA Oregon Chapter President. Sarah’s work on the Airbnb project won her firm the Design Excellence Awards Best in Category for the Airbnb Customer Experience Hub, Juror’s Choice for – Architecture +Collaboration for Airbnb Customer Experience Hub and Silver Lion – Branded Environments for Airbnb Customer Experience Hub. Sarah also won the Merit Award for DOW Chemical Company – Houston Regional Office. All of this amazing work is a testament to her being a design innovator for our community and beyond.
Sarah exemplifies in so many ways the characteristics of a strong leader, mentor, design innovator, and all-around passionate role-model. Congratulations Sarah on being the recipient of the 2018 IIDA Oregon Chapter Legacy Award, you are a genuine asset to and advocate of the profession of Interior Design in the State of Oregon.
