Greetings

Thank you so much to all who attended, ‘A Gold Affair’ a Celebration and Fundraiser for the IIDA Oregon Chapter. It was truly an incredible evening full of celebration, dancing, food and drink, raffle prizes, sunsets and some really creative dazzling gold attire! I had the opportunity to talk to many of you throughout the evening and I just want to let you know how much the IIDA Oregon Chapter appreciates your kind words of encouragement, thanks, praise, sponsorship, volunteer hours, attendance and dedication to the profession. I am so proud and honored to be a part of a community of Designers and Industry partners that is so supportive of one another.IIDA 2015 Annual Celebration-10

For those who were not able to attend the event and you don’t know me yet, my name is Carissa Mylin and I am the 2015-2016 IIDA Oregon Chapter President. I also want to share with you some of the initiatives that the IIDA Oregon Chapter will be pursuing over the next year to reinforce our mission, to be the face of professional Interior Design in the state of Oregon.

  • Our primary focus will be on continued public outreach on the impact and importance of legislation for our profession. More than ever we need legal recognition to support and advance the talented, educated and highly qualified women and men who work in Oregon’s design firms and especially for those who work as sole practitioners. It is time for qualified design professionals to come to the collaborative tables we sit at every day with other regulated professionals, engineers, contractors, architects and code officials and be recognized as equal contributing partners. And most importantly, it is time for the public to be educated and aware of the importance of hiring qualified interior designers to work in code impacted environments. This year we will be working hard to inform, educate and engage the community on issues related to legislation through our chapter blog and legislative forums. We will also be seeking greater engagement from the design community to support a more impactful presence in Salem.
  • As the design industry grows exponentially in the State of Oregon, it is becoming increasingly important to connect our firms to emerging design professionals. This year our Student Affairs team will be hosting a new event format to increase the exposure of our student members to professional presentation, as well as increasing the exposure of Design leadership to emerging professionals. We will also be working on the second annual West Coast Student Design Charette which will be held in Seattle this year, which means an even greater exposure of Student Members to the Pacific Northwest Design community.
  • Finally we will be focusing on providing educational content that will continue to enhance the knowledge and skills of our members at all levels. We are looking forward to your attendance and engagement in some of the important Forums and discussions that will be taking place over the next year. Our board works tirelessly to provide opportunities and content to engage you and to enrich your experience as an IIDA Oregon Chapter member, so we look forward to seeing each of you at our events as a guest or a volunteer. If you are not an IIDA Oregon Chapter member, we look forward discussing the value of membership with you and hope that you will join our vibrant, talented community of professionals.

IIDA 2015 Annual Celebration-6_small

For the second year in a row, all of the IIDA Oregon Chapter board positions have been filled at the beginning of the board year. The IIDA Oregon Chapter board looks forward to working together to carry out the IIDA Oregon Chapter mission, “To be the face of professional interior design in the State of Oregon.”

Thank you all so much for being members of the IIDA Oregon Chapter, we are so proud of this community.IIDA 2015 Annual Celebration-11_square

Advocacy Update: Get Involved!

OregonCapital_blog

The Advocacy effort in the State of Oregon has gained a lot of momentum in 2015. Over the past few months, the focus of IDC-Oregon and our Lobbyist has been to develop a series of bills for consideration and to gauge interest with legislators.  From this effort, IDC-Oregon has determined that it would be worth our time to pursue the Title Act.  The bill will be available later this year for public viewing. Please stay tuned to IIDA Oregon Chapter communications for a link to this bill and  it’s key outcomes.

One way in which  IDC Oregon can show support for their efforts to Legislators is through membership numbers.  If you haven’t signed up to be an IDC-Oregon supporter, please visit http://idc-oregon.org/ and sign up, it’s FREE to join!

To further raise awareness for Interior Design in Oregon, IDC is organizing two events in the coming months; a Lobby Day in Salem and a fundraising event.  For more information on these events and how you can participate, please visit http://idc-oregon.org/

IIDA CHAPTERS ANNOUNCE
FIRST WEST COAST STUDENT DESIGN CHARETTE

Los Angeles, CA — The International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Northern California, Northern Pacific, Oregon, and Southern California Chapters are proud to announce the Inaugural West Coast Student Design Charette competition. The competition will be held on April 11, 2015 in Los Angeles, CA. Collectively, the four IIDA Chapters represent 2,350 Members in Alaska, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Alberta, British Columbia and 65 Design programs.

CREATION OF THE STUDENT DESIGN CHARETTE EVENTS
The vision for the charette competitions was initiated at the first annual leaders retreat of the four West Coast IIDA Chapters in the fall of 2010, to showcase the up-and-coming interior design talent across our region. The IIDA Southern California Chapter was the first Chapter to host a local student charette in 2012, and has held one each year since. The IIDA Oregon Chapter followed with their local event in 2014. Between November 2014 and February 2015, all four West Coast IIDA Chapters will host a local event and advance the winning student teams on to Los Angeles, CA for the West Coast competition. The winning West Coast team will be awarded a trip to Chicago to compete in the International IIDA Student Design Charette during NeoCon 2015.

ABOUT THE EVENTS
The Student Design Charette events are modeled much like the IIDA International Student Design Charette. At each level of competition, teams will be comprised of student members from different schools and grade levels, and of varying IIDA Chapters at the West Coast level.

Teams of student members will be solving a design challenge within 6 hours, using only hand drafting and rendering. The teams will present their design solutions to a panel of judges comprised of West Coast Interior Design Professionals. Following critiques of the solutions, the judges will select a winning team to advance to the next level of Interior Design Charette competition.

An evening of networking will occur on April 10, 2015, the day before the West Coast Charette. Professionals from several Interior Design firms will present in a “Reverse Pecha Kucha” format to communicate their respective firm design cultures and work to the students. After winners of the West Coast Student Design Charette are announced, all participating students will be treated to a private dinner followed by a  tour of the Getty Museum.

ONGOING INFORMATION
Further coverage and event info will be posted on the West Coast Charette host’s IIDA Southern California Chapter Blog, at iida-socal.org.

2014: The Year in Review

It is that time of year when we all look back and undergo an introspective process of what we have accomplished.  This past year, we have reaffirmed our commitment to bring the Members of the IIDA Oregon Chapter increased value for your membership. Your 2014-2015 IIDA Oregon Chapter Board has been hard at work implementing programs and initiatives that make this commitment tangible. This year has flown by… and in case you have missed them, we have outlined some of our notable achievements from 2014 below:

  •  We added Board positions. In the Spring of 2014, we re-evaluated our Board positions and position descriptions to provide more equity amongst position responsibilities and we have added positions where needed to ensure that we are organized to carry out member focused initiatives.  One of the major results of this, was the creation of a Student Affairs team. This team is focused on creating strong connections with our five academic design programs, providing valuable student-centric programming and assisting students in transitioning into professional careers.
  • We filled all Board positions.  Filling board positions allows for the work that we are doing to be equally distributed amongst efforts.  This allows for Board Members to be fully engaged in their role, delivering more value to you.
  • The Board now operates out of …‘the cloud’. While this may sound dry, it is very important and exciting!  By switching to a cloud based operation, we have greater access to historical information and tools that aid our function, allowing us to maximize our time and focus on delivering programming and initiatives, which are most important to you. Additionally, this has improved the way in which we share information with one another and with other Chapters, capitalizing on the dense network of international IIDA members.
  • We have an improved website interface and social media presence. Through Membership Surveys, we learned that a majority of our members are relying on digital interfaces and social media to receive and respond to information.  The new website interface is geared towards getting you information about the Chapter faster by putting the most sought after information right on the homepage. This interface includes a Member Spotlight (featuring one of our wonderful Members each month) and a blog, which features real-time news about Chapter activities and Advocacy efforts. Since the launch of the new website, the average daily number of page visits has increased by 410%, and the number of New Users to the website has increased by 759%!
Additionally, we have increased the frequency and regularity in which we post information about our events, news and organization on our social media outlets.  Not only does this provide you with more information about the Chapter and Chapter activities, it creates awareness of our organization and the value of Professional Interior Design services amongst the general public.  These efforts have resulted in a 33% increase in ‘Likes’ and number of people reached by our Facebook page since July 1st.
  • We are notifying you about events sooner. Through the Membership Survey, we also learned that a majority of our members start planning to attend events a month ahead of time.  In response, we are now beginning to notify you about events a month before and weekly up until they occur, through weekly email and social media updates. This, in addition to programming efforts, has resulted in a 23% increase in event attendance in 2014!
  • We have revamped our sponsorship benefits. In response to the results of our Annual Sponsorship Survey, we have developed new benefits that seek to provide better value to our sponsors.  Some of the new benefits include free memberships, a chance to present an award at the Design Excellence Awards, tickets to events and product display opportunities.  We have also developed a specific set of Annual Sponsorship benefits for firm sponsors that relate more closely to firm interests.  Additionally, firms that host Chapter Presidents will now be receiving a Sterling Level sponsorship for the year in which their term is active, in recognition of their dedication of time and resources to the organization.
  • We held an NCIDQ Mock Practicum. In order to further assist Associate members in preparing for and passing the NCIDQ exam, we held the first ever ‘Mock Practicum’.  This session emulated real testing conditions, was held in in the room at the Art Institute of Portland where the test is administered and was moderated by NCIDQ Certificate holders. After each test session, test takers had an opportunity to compare solutions with one another and the moderators.
  • We have begun planning for Oregon Chapter participation in a Regional Student Charette. The idea for the charette competitions was discussed at the first annual leaders retreat of the four West Coast IIDA Chapters in the fall of 2010, as a way to showcase the up and coming interior design talent across the Western region. The IIDA Southern California Chapter was the first Chapter to host a local student charette in 2012 and has held one each year since.  The IIDA Oregon Chapter followed with their local event in 2014.  Between November 2014 and February 2015, all four West Coast IIDA Chapters will host a local event and send the winning teams on to Los Angeles for the regional competition. At each level of competition, teams will be comprised of students from different schools and grade levels, and of varying Chapters at the Regional level.  The winning team will be awarded a trip to Chicago to compete in the International IIDA Student Design Charette during NeoCon 2015!

Our Board Members bring a constant level of inspired dedication to the Chapter… and it shows! The efforts of each individual board member serving on the board now and in the past have built a strong Chapter that is well positioned to promote the value of professional, commercial interior design services and support our members through networking and continuing education opportunities. Thank you all for your time and commitment to our Chapter!

As we move into 2015, we are looking forward to serving the Chapter by continuing to build upon the strategies and initiatives of this Board year. Thank you for your support of our Chapter and we look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events!

IIDA Oregon Chapter Says ‘Thanks!’

A heartfelt THANK YOU to our members, sponsors, supporters and volunteers! The IIDA Oregon Chapter is grateful for your talent, time and advocacy of professional interior design. Great design doesn’t just happen; we are grateful for all of your hard work that goes into creating meaningful interior spaces.

Help us spread the word, share this post with a designer or industry member you are grateful to work with. Tag: #iidaor_saysThanks    #GratefulForGoodDesign

Advocacy: We need your vote on Political Mapping!

Political Mapping Vote graphic.pngWE NEED YOUR VOTE on Political Mapping of Interior Designers!

Recently, the Interior Design Collaboration – Oregon restructured its board construction. As such, both ASID and IIDA are equally responsible for it’s direction and management. For this current legislative year, the IDC-Oregon board hired a public relations manager, Hilltop Public Solutions, to aid in our grass roots effort. They have begun an exercise called “political mapping.” This exercise helps our coalition see where our constituency lives and which legislators to focus our attention to. Hilltop needs information from as many interior designers in the state of Oregon as possible to make this mapping accurate. IIDA Oregon is reaching out to you to ask if we may release your name, full address, and place of employment to Hilltop. Your member information will be used for this exercise only and will not be shared with any other third parties not approved by IIDA National or Oregon Chapter.

We want to respect your information and ask you to vote “yes” or “no” to allow the release of this information to Hilltop Public Solutions. Please do so by next Friday, 11/14/14. Should you have any questions about IDC-Oregon, Hilltop Public Solutions or political mapping, please contact Vice President of Advocacy, Roberta Pennington, IIDA at roberta-pennington@clear.net

Please take a moment to vote YES or NO by clicking here.

Recap: 2014 Student Kick-off Events

Student Event2

The new school year is off to a great start! The IIDA Oregon Chapter fall student kick-off events were well attended by both students and professionals. The events coincided with the first couple of weeks of classes to strengthen our connection to students studying interior design.  We held two separate events, a ‘local’ event in Portland and a ‘state’ event in Corvallis in the hopes of capturing students studying design throughout the state.

At the local event, students toured two projects in downtown Portland. The first tour was the recently completed Schnitzer Steel Industries corporate office design by GBD Architects. Insight from both the designer and client gave students the opportunity to hear multiple perspectives on the design process. The second tour met at the US Bancorp Tower. The lobby of the building is under construction, giving students a unique opportunity to see how a space can be revitalized, how finish materials are installed, and how a large renovation is phased.

At the state event, students met on the Oregon State University Campus.  Boora Architects presented the design and plan for a new classroom building that is focused on active learning.  Following the presentation, students were able to tour the site and witness the construction process as how the uniquely designed classrooms are taking form.

Both events ended with snacks and networking, a presentation about the benefits of IIDA membership and how the Student Affairs Committee can be a resource to Oregon’s design students! Thank you to all who contributed to the events!

The 2014-2015 Call for Sponsorship

IIDAsponsorship_webheader600 Dear Sponsors, Members, and Supporters,

As many of you know, this past board year has been a huge success! Not only did we have some great events – our first ever Speakeasy Soiree Annual Celebration, an exciting Design Crawl event, and a series of excellent Educational Forums, just to name a few – but our chapter’s membership continues to grow. Yes, we’ve accomplished many exciting things, but no, we couldn’t possibly do it without the generous support of you, our fabulous sponsors!

Kicking off this new board year, I’d like to introduce you to our sponsorship team. We’re here to help in any way we can! As VP of Sponsorship and Fundraising, I’m available for any questions, concerns, feedback, and assistance in making the sponsorship process run as smoothly as possible. I work directly with our Chairs, Will Eichelberger from the Eaton Group, and Jenna McPherson from SRG Partnership, to ensure that you are recognized by our A&D community. When Patrick had to move away, Will jumped right in and has done an excellent job ever since. We are thrilled to have him on board again! Will primarily manages all event sponsorship, but is available to help the team and answer any questions you may have. We are also excited to announce our new Annual Sponsorship Chair, Jenna McPherson. Jenna is originally from Boulder, CO and is currently an interior designer at SRG Partnership. She has degrees in Interior Design, Psychology, and Sociology. Jenna has been a designer for two and half years and is a great addition to our group! Jenna will be taking care of all of our annual sponsors. She is here to make sure that our annual sponsors receive their sponsorship benefits and generally keeping in touch with them throughout the year. Of course, we are a team, so feel free to contact any of us – together we hope to make this the best year for you yet!

As our membership continues to grow, our goal is to provide bigger, better and more exciting events and opportunities for us to support the intent of elevating the level of professionalism for Interior Designers in Oregon. So what does sponsorship mean, exactly? Your contributions make it possible for us to support scholarships for our members, host student focused events, contribute to legislative efforts pursued by IDC-Oregon, host special speakers at events, provide for annual operations and overhead, furnish resources for events, and so much more! Luckily, with your support, we can continue to maintain this high level of excellence and strive to make being a part of our chapter a positive experience each year.

In order to ensure that the sponsorship process goes smoothly, we’ve developed – based on our research and your feedback – the following packet. This packet outlines great options to either sponsor one or more events, OR to become an annual sponsor. In addition to the annual and event sponsorship breakdown, we have included a full list of events organized during the board year and the sponsorship levels associated with each of them. This way you can see exactly what your options are for event sponsorship from September 2014 to July 2015. In addition, we have revised the benefit list to help better match your contribution to a direct value for you and your company. This packet provides you with a time-saving IIDA-Oregon one-stop-shop; and just like your generosity, we hope it will be as valuable to you as it is to us!

All the best for the year,

T é J A R A

Favorite IIDA event: I really enjoy the IIDA forums.  I think the past few years the Oregon Chapter has reinvented the forum platform and put together some really great combinations of designers, business owners and creative professionals with topics that span our industry as well as other creative industries that thrive here in Portland.  I appreciate that the board has branched out to other avenues of design and practice for these forum panels.  I also like that the forums are usually a smaller event in a more intimate setting.

Favorite Portland Restaurant: This is the hardest question on the list!  I think good food is the second most important thing to me, next to good design of course.  It’s a tossup between Ox, Laurelhurst Market and Nuestra Cocina; all totally different experiences, but all equally satisfying.  I also really love Shandong in NE for casual dining.

Favorite color at the moment?: Navy.  Anyone who knows me knows I love blue, but really it’s all about Navy.  Its classic, it’s strong and it’s timeless.  It will never go out of style.  Charcoal is a very close second.

Favorite design magazine/blog?: Need Supply Co. – Moments With Sunday blog.  Need Supply Co. is an online retail website based in Richmond, VA.  They have a weekly lifestyle blog on Sundays where they cover a variety of topics that span from fashion, music and art to designers, style icons and unique travel destinations.  I find a lot of their topics interesting and inspiring, outside the norm of commercial interior design.

Why are you a member of IIDA?: I’m a member of IIDA to stay connected to the industry and the other design professionals in Portland.  I think it’s important to support our design community in any way we can.  I’m also a member to support my design friends who volunteer their time and energy to be design leaders, IIDA presidents and board members, and to represent YGH in the design community.

Massachusetts Celebrates Passing ID Bill Into Law

#Advocate_teal
Aug. 21 was a victory for the Interior Design profession as Gov. Deval Patrick (D-MA) signed into law a bill that will expand the rights and privileges of Interior Designers to bid on state contracts in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The new law establishes the right of Interior Designers to serve as the prime consultant for state contracts, allowing credentialed designers increased opportunities for work and wholly recognizing the profession of Interior Design. It will go into effect Nov. 21.

The IIDA New England Chapter played a pivotal role in seeing this bill to passage with the support of the Massachusetts Interior Design Coalition (MiDC) and lobbyist, Serlin Haley, LLP. Thank you and congratulations to the IIDA New England Chapter for their continued grassroots efforts to advocate for the Interior Design profession. For more information about the new bill, click HERE for the IIDA press release.

Seven Things You Need to Know about Advocacy

OregonCapital_blog

Recently, we changed our name from “Government and Regulatory Affairs” to “Advocacy.” The IIDA Oregon Advocacy Committee (VP of Advocacy, Roberta Pennington, IIDA and Chair of Advocacy, Bethanne Mikkelsen, IIDA) will be your IIDA representative on the Interior Design Collaborative-Oregon’s (IDC-OR) board as well as inform you of legal and code updates within the state of Oregon.

Headquarters recently published a brochure all about IIDA Advocacy, available here.

  1. We’re introducing a bill this year.
After the amazing momentum we gained last year by having our bill pass through one committee to another, we are not stopping. This year, we are reintroducing our practice act with modified language. I will be posting all the progress and legalese once it’s official. With a blog, the information will get to you sooner.

  2. IIDA Oregon is a key stake holder in the Oregon coalition (aka: IDC-Oregon) for establishing the title of Registered Interior Designer.
Together with our partners from ASID and other independent interior designers in the state of Oregon, we will be working with legislators and A&D professionals to make interior design a recognized profession.

  3. More new newness from IDC-Oregon:
IDC-Oregon is restructuring its board. This restructuring will allow for greater flexibility for its board members to focus on one task at hand and still maintain a work schedule and, if you can believe it, a personal life. We are moving forward this year with our bill and continuing to build on the progress made by past coalition volunteers. Please join us for an ASID hosted happy hour August 22nd to learn more about what will be taking place this year and how IIDA and ASID will be working together. Location: TBD. Stay tuned!

  4. Advocacy Volunteering is not just for young designers.
When we spring forth from our respective schools (Go Kent Flashes!), we are full of enthusiasm yet to be sullied by the “real world.” This enthusiasm is what give the IIDA Advocacy Committee its gas. We need you students; you just spent tens of thousands of dollars on your education, some of which went straight into the coffers of state-run organizations. Legislators need to be reminded of this.

We need people to steer this enthusiasm. That’s where seasoned professionals come in. How much of your effort and income have fueled the economy of Oregon? Think it matters if legislators know your story? Yup. And with your long-term legacy of design in Oregon, they want to know how your talents have made an impact in our state.

  5. Know your legislators and network with them.
We network the bajeebers out of our IIDA Oregon events; networking with state legislators is the same. In fact, we have a leg up. It’s an election year and legislators want to hear from us, Oregon professionals. Networking with elected officials is as easy as letting them know you are registered to vote and you are part of a professional organization with a bill to be introduced this coming year.

Not sure who your representatives are? Try this site:
    https://www.oregonlegislature.gov/FindYourLegislator/leg-districts.html
And be sure to follow up with an e-mail reminding them of your conversation. They love that.

  6. Advocacy impacts Oregon history.
Remember the first time you visited the library? So much history and process and there you are right in the middle of it, adding to that history and process. In our interactions with clients, we impart our wisdom and personalities to make spaces better. Going to the capital and being a part of testimony to impact our design profession is no different and it’s on record for all time.

  7. Advocacy is fun.
Did I tell you how I stopped in the middle of my testimony last winter to tell the legislators I was shaking more than a nervous wiener dog? (Roberta’s Bucket List, Item #31: Making Oregon Senators laugh: check!)

The Advocacy Team will be checking in with you every month with legislation, code and all things advocacy this board year via blog. Once the legislative session begins, our team will have a lot to report and we invite you to check in often!
