What’s your favorite space in your home and why?
The Family Room. This is where we clear space, and really spend quality time together as a family. My daughter is 4 years old and is incredibly energetic and active. Her imagination runs wild. Like many Dads, I get the tremendous privilege to play the best supporting actor in all of her plays, to be the villain or superhero in a game of chase, or to huddle around this little round table and play all of her favorite board games. In the Fall/Winter there is a “rip-roaring” fire which draws us close together, and we love the occasion of making s’mores. We connect, dream build, and laugh a lot in this room. The people I love most make this space so amazing.
Favorite Portland Restaurant?
Fogo De Chao. I love seeing the look of excitement on my wife’s face when we sit down and she can fill her plate with all of her favorite foods, and we can enjoy an amazing glass of wine together. This is a great restaurant, with a variety of foods and world class service.
What project have you worked on that you are most proud of?
The Portland Airport. As everyone in Portland knows, there is a huge craze over this carpet. This was a major job and big win for my company. There were so many different intricate pieces working together to make this project a success- design, customization, production, installation, scheduling, and everything else associated with this job. There are over 80,000 SY of commercial broadloom carpet, which is equivalent to 13 acres of carpet. This was fun, daunting, and turned out incredibly well with all of the impressive effort from the individuals involved. I am grateful to have been a part of this job.
On a typical Saturday where can we find you?
On a typical Saturday you can find me out on the trails running early in the morning. I enjoy training and competing in Spartan races which require mountainous outdoor terrain, and Oregon has the best to offer. I have been astounded many times by passing by various wildlife- owls, ducks, geese, deer and yes little white bunny rabbits. I thought this was only available in dream land…
What gets you excited about design?
There is so much creativity and thought that goes into designing a space. A space designed well can help a customer step into the life of their brand, and showcase this brand to the world. It is so much fun to tap into the creative genius of the interior designers I work with, and it is an incredible privilege to have my product selected for their projects. Outstanding design requires focused thought, dedicated energy, unique and specific inspiration based on the customer’s needs. I have the blessing to work with some of the best in the industry.

Student Design Charette: Chapter Finals Summary
Event Summary
The Chapter Finals round of the IIDA Western Region Student Design Charette series took place on Saturday, February 20th in IIDA Northern Pacific, Northern California, Oregon, Southern California and Southwest Chapters. At this event, teams of Student Members solved a design challenge within 6 hours, without the use of technological aid. The teams presented their design solutions to a panel of jurors comprised of professionals from each Chapter. Following critiques of the solutions, jurors selected a winning team to advance to the Western Regional Student Design Charette in Seattle on April 16th, where teams will be comprised of students from different schools, grade levels and Chapters . Winners of this event will then be awarded a trip to Chicago to compete at the IIDA International Student Charette during NeoCon on June 15, 2016.
Chapter Finals Charette Design Problem
Each team at the Chapter Finals event was assigned the same project; a small after school arts program in downtown Portland, Oregon – the Academy of Urban Arts. The Academy would provide free classes and workshops to some 2,000 people each year and will include a new state of the art gallery space, housing art exhibits from urban communities around the world.
The program focused on the development of a design that will serve at-risk youth and young adults that participate the Academy of Urban Arts programs. The overall building that the Academy of Urban Arts occupies is a total of three levels; however, participants were asked to focus on the design of the elementary wing, six to eleven years of age. Â Incorporating design elements that would bring together a diverse group of youth, who may have different cultural values, special needs or behaviors. Â They were asked to provide a design supports a safe and secure environment, as well as the different cultural values and immersion into the local community.
The IIDA Student Member teams were judged on the function, design, creativity/originality, acoustical consideration, aesthetics, oral and graphic presentation of their projects.
The program was produced by the IIDA Oregon Chapter’s Co-VP of Student Affairs, Mia Allen, IIDA of Ankrom Moisan Portland, and Crystal Daily, Assoc. IIDA, Dark Light Design from the Northern Pacific Chapter.

Favorite space in your home: My living room is my favorite space in my home. My mother, who owns Oberlin’s Custom Design, has sourced, designed and/or made most of the furniture and objects within. It’s peaceful to me and is the first place I go to relax.
Design accessory you just can’t live without: Deep Black. You often will not find me without soaking in black attire.
What project have you worked on that you are most proud of and why?: I have been blessed in my career with millions of square feet of design I am extremely proud of. One special project that is near and dear to my heart is Kaiser’s Westside Medical Center. The project was Kaiser’s first LEED accredited facility; the design team, owner and contractor were a team in its truest sense, from planning to its first patient. The art program was integral to the design/functionality of the space, We created spaces where people love to work, Doctors and nurses have a higher functionality and productivity, and patients have a beautiful space to heal.
What gets you excited about design?: Seeing a team that empowers each other, where new, innovative or quirky ideas are celebrated and the outcome of the environment has enabled people to have the lifestyle they desire, productivity or business goals are achieved with more relationships built than they could have been imagined. I’m a strong believer that great design enables strong relationships. People to people, people to space and business to environments.
Interesting fact: My first real design job on my own was my restaurant, Café Roche. I renovated, designed, marketed, created the menu and ran it as the head chef. I was 19, sold it after 3 years and moved to Japan where I worked in design + construction services.

Favorite color at the moment? Deep colors – navy blue, forest green, red, I think it has to do with the rainy weather…
On a typical Saturday where can we find you? At the gym or running outside. I feel most myself when in the great outdoors. Lately, I’ve been consumed with wedding planning/designing – it’s really hard when it’s for you!
Design accessory you just can’t live without? Personally for my home – Pillows! I think I have a slight obsession.
Why do you support interior design licensing? If there’s a way to enhance my career and level of professionalism, I’m going to do it. For me it was by taking the NCIDQ exam. Currently, it’s the most comprehensive exam interior designers can take to test their knowledge that pertains to the health, safety and welfare of building occupants. Passing the exam was a small step, opening up new opportunities while steering my career in the direction I’d like it to go. But now what? The state of Oregon has no legislation in place that regulates the profession of interior design. Currently anyone can call themselves an interior designer, even without passing the NCIDQ, going to an accredited design college, or by working experience at a reputable firm. For instance, if I wanted to start my own business and stamp my own drawings, I couldn’t – and that’s a road block, not only for me but for all interior designers in the state of Oregon who share a similar goal. I support interior design licensing because I believe in equality.
