Student Design Charette: Chapter Finals Summary

Event Summary

The Chapter Finals round of the IIDA Western Region Student Design Charette series took place on Saturday, February 20th in IIDA Northern Pacific, Northern California, Oregon, Southern California and Southwest Chapters. At this event, teams of Student Members solved a design challenge within 6 hours, without the use of technological aid. The teams presented their design solutions to a panel of jurors comprised of professionals from each Chapter. Following critiques of the solutions, jurors selected a winning team to advance to the Western Regional Student Design Charette in Seattle on April 16th, where teams will be comprised of students from different schools, grade levels and Chapters . Winners of this event will then be awarded a trip to Chicago to compete at the IIDA International Student Charette during NeoCon on June 15, 2016.

Chapter Finals Charette Design Problem

Each team at the Chapter Finals event was assigned the same project; a small after school arts program in downtown Portland, Oregon – the Academy of Urban Arts. The Academy would provide free classes and workshops to some 2,000 people each year and will include a new state of the art gallery space, housing art exhibits from urban communities around the world.

The program focused on the development of a design that will serve at-risk youth and young adults that participate the Academy of Urban Arts programs. The overall building that the Academy of Urban Arts occupies is a total of three levels; however, participants were asked to focus on the design of the elementary wing, six to eleven years of age.  Incorporating design elements that would bring together a diverse group of youth, who may have different cultural values, special needs or behaviors.  They were asked to provide a design supports a safe and secure environment, as well as the different cultural values and immersion into the local community.

The IIDA Student Member teams were judged on the function, design, creativity/originality, acoustical consideration, aesthetics, oral and graphic presentation of their projects.

The program was produced by the IIDA Oregon Chapter’s Co-VP of Student Affairs, Mia Allen, IIDA of Ankrom Moisan Portland, and Crystal Daily, Assoc. IIDA, Dark Light Design from the Northern Pacific Chapter.
