The new school year is off to a great start! The IIDA Oregon Chapter fall student kick-off events were well attended by both students and professionals. The events coincided with the first couple of weeks of classes to strengthen our connection to students studying interior design.  We held two separate events, a ‘local’ event in Portland and a ‘state’ event in Corvallis in the hopes of capturing students studying design throughout the state.
At the local event, students toured two projects in downtown Portland. The first tour was the recently completed Schnitzer Steel Industries corporate office design by GBD Architects. Insight from both the designer and client gave students the opportunity to hear multiple perspectives on the design process. The second tour met at the US Bancorp Tower. The lobby of the building is under construction, giving students a unique opportunity to see how a space can be revitalized, how finish materials are installed, and how a large renovation is phased.
At the state event, students met on the Oregon State University Campus. Â Boora Architects presented the design and plan for a new classroom building that is focused on active learning. Â Following the presentation, students were able to tour the site and witness the construction process as how the uniquely designed classrooms are taking form.
Both events ended with snacks and networking, a presentation about the benefits of IIDA membership and how the Student Affairs Committee can be a resource to Oregon’s design students! Thank you to all who contributed to the events!
