2014: The Year in Review

It is that time of year when we all look back and undergo an introspective process of what we have accomplished.  This past year, we have reaffirmed our commitment to bring the Members of the IIDA Oregon Chapter increased value for your membership. Your 2014-2015 IIDA Oregon Chapter Board has been hard at work implementing programs and initiatives that make this commitment tangible. This year has flown by… and in case you have missed them, we have outlined some of our notable achievements from 2014 below:

  •  We added Board positions. In the Spring of 2014, we re-evaluated our Board positions and position descriptions to provide more equity amongst position responsibilities and we have added positions where needed to ensure that we are organized to carry out member focused initiatives.  One of the major results of this, was the creation of a Student Affairs team. This team is focused on creating strong connections with our five academic design programs, providing valuable student-centric programming and assisting students in transitioning into professional careers.
  • We filled all Board positions.  Filling board positions allows for the work that we are doing to be equally distributed amongst efforts.  This allows for Board Members to be fully engaged in their role, delivering more value to you.
  • The Board now operates out of …‘the cloud’. While this may sound dry, it is very important and exciting!  By switching to a cloud based operation, we have greater access to historical information and tools that aid our function, allowing us to maximize our time and focus on delivering programming and initiatives, which are most important to you. Additionally, this has improved the way in which we share information with one another and with other Chapters, capitalizing on the dense network of international IIDA members.
  • We have an improved website interface and social media presence. Through Membership Surveys, we learned that a majority of our members are relying on digital interfaces and social media to receive and respond to information.  The new website interface is geared towards getting you information about the Chapter faster by putting the most sought after information right on the homepage. This interface includes a Member Spotlight (featuring one of our wonderful Members each month) and a blog, which features real-time news about Chapter activities and Advocacy efforts. Since the launch of the new website, the average daily number of page visits has increased by 410%, and the number of New Users to the website has increased by 759%!
Additionally, we have increased the frequency and regularity in which we post information about our events, news and organization on our social media outlets.  Not only does this provide you with more information about the Chapter and Chapter activities, it creates awareness of our organization and the value of Professional Interior Design services amongst the general public.  These efforts have resulted in a 33% increase in ‘Likes’ and number of people reached by our Facebook page since July 1st.
  • We are notifying you about events sooner. Through the Membership Survey, we also learned that a majority of our members start planning to attend events a month ahead of time.  In response, we are now beginning to notify you about events a month before and weekly up until they occur, through weekly email and social media updates. This, in addition to programming efforts, has resulted in a 23% increase in event attendance in 2014!
  • We have revamped our sponsorship benefits. In response to the results of our Annual Sponsorship Survey, we have developed new benefits that seek to provide better value to our sponsors.  Some of the new benefits include free memberships, a chance to present an award at the Design Excellence Awards, tickets to events and product display opportunities.  We have also developed a specific set of Annual Sponsorship benefits for firm sponsors that relate more closely to firm interests.  Additionally, firms that host Chapter Presidents will now be receiving a Sterling Level sponsorship for the year in which their term is active, in recognition of their dedication of time and resources to the organization.
  • We held an NCIDQ Mock Practicum. In order to further assist Associate members in preparing for and passing the NCIDQ exam, we held the first ever ‘Mock Practicum’.  This session emulated real testing conditions, was held in in the room at the Art Institute of Portland where the test is administered and was moderated by NCIDQ Certificate holders. After each test session, test takers had an opportunity to compare solutions with one another and the moderators.
  • We have begun planning for Oregon Chapter participation in a Regional Student Charette. The idea for the charette competitions was discussed at the first annual leaders retreat of the four West Coast IIDA Chapters in the fall of 2010, as a way to showcase the up and coming interior design talent across the Western region. The IIDA Southern California Chapter was the first Chapter to host a local student charette in 2012 and has held one each year since.  The IIDA Oregon Chapter followed with their local event in 2014.  Between November 2014 and February 2015, all four West Coast IIDA Chapters will host a local event and send the winning teams on to Los Angeles for the regional competition. At each level of competition, teams will be comprised of students from different schools and grade levels, and of varying Chapters at the Regional level.  The winning team will be awarded a trip to Chicago to compete in the International IIDA Student Design Charette during NeoCon 2015!

Our Board Members bring a constant level of inspired dedication to the Chapter… and it shows! The efforts of each individual board member serving on the board now and in the past have built a strong Chapter that is well positioned to promote the value of professional, commercial interior design services and support our members through networking and continuing education opportunities. Thank you all for your time and commitment to our Chapter!

As we move into 2015, we are looking forward to serving the Chapter by continuing to build upon the strategies and initiatives of this Board year. Thank you for your support of our Chapter and we look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events!

Member Spotlight: Maddy Gorman

Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 preset

Name: Maddy Gorman
Membership Type: Student
School/Experience: I am currently a 5th year student at the University of Oregon studying Interior Architecture. I was also a student interior design intern for Ankrom Moisan Architects this past summer.

Favorite IIDA event: The Student Design Charrette last Spring was my first and favorite IIDA event (so far). I wanted to get more involved as a student, so I convinced myself to attend, despite being nervous about working on a fast-paced project with someone I had never met before. It ended up being incredibly invigorating. I learned a lot about my strengths and weaknesses by working with my partner, and about how I think as a designer. It was also the first time applying what I have learned in school to something outside of my classes. I highly recommend this event to students. It is so much fun, you start connecting with people in the design field early, and it shows you what you are capable of that you may not have realized.

Favorite space designed in Portland: This isn’t a commercial project, but the Harpoon House in SE Portland has really influenced the way that I think about space. I was fortunate to tour the home last fall for my Micro Living studio. I think it successfully demonstrates how you can make a small space feel large using windows, outdoor space, multi-functional furniture, and clever ways of combining functions and activities. It is only about 700 square feet but feels so easily livable – the thought put into how the owners use the space, the creative ways in which the spaces are organized and how the circulation wraps up through the house is really inspiring.

Hobbies: Rock scrambling, kayaking, rafting, hiking, and bike rides are some of the things I enjoy most when I have the time. I also love road trips, especially to National Parks. My mother makes jewelry, so I spend time creating necklaces with her when I am home on breaks. Pinterest has a way of getting my endorphins going and being a great time suck.

Interesting fact: This is more of a message to all of the struggling and confused beginning design students. When I entered the IARC program at the University of Oregon my freshman year, I knew close to nothing about architecture (I didn’t even know who Frank Lloyd Wright was). I went in to one of my professor’s office multiple times that year crying, because I kept comparing myself to everyone else and believed that I wasn’t meant to be designer because I was too practical, too much of a “concrete thinker.” One day, I drew a diagram showing how I felt – sometimes I felt inspired and excited, other times I felt that I wasn’t cut out for this field. She just looked at me and pointed out the fact that I had just drawn a diagram to show my thoughts, and that is part of what designers do. She explained that some students come in with knowledge and some don’t, but at some point, it would mostly level out. Long story short, that tiny seed of visual thinking kept me in the program, and I stuck with it and have no regrets. I slowly grew from knowing nothing to feeling like I have found my niche and am very excited for my future. The lesson: You will learn, and you will grow, and you will exercise all areas of your mind over time, so do not compare yourself because people learn at different rates. You don’t have to be the best as long as you are your best. You will get there if it is what you want to do.

Why are you a member of IIDA?: I became an official member at the same time that I joined the executive board for University of Oregon IIDA. It became really important to me to get involved, to offer great opportunities for students newer to the IARC program, and encouraging others to get involved and use all of the great resources. I have met so many talented designers and people within the field, and it has been a great way to make connections and prepare myself for becoming a professional. I think it is pretty unique that people in the same field who work in all different places throughout the city and state can come together and develop relationships, and it is always a lot of fun. I look forward to being able to attend more events in Portland once I move back!

Advocacy: We need your vote on Political Mapping!

Political Mapping Vote graphic.pngWE NEED YOUR VOTE on Political Mapping of Interior Designers!

Recently, the Interior Design Collaboration – Oregon restructured its board construction. As such, both ASID and IIDA are equally responsible for it’s direction and management. For this current legislative year, the IDC-Oregon board hired a public relations manager, Hilltop Public Solutions, to aid in our grass roots effort. They have begun an exercise called “political mapping.” This exercise helps our coalition see where our constituency lives and which legislators to focus our attention to. Hilltop needs information from as many interior designers in the state of Oregon as possible to make this mapping accurate. IIDA Oregon is reaching out to you to ask if we may release your name, full address, and place of employment to Hilltop. Your member information will be used for this exercise only and will not be shared with any other third parties not approved by IIDA National or Oregon Chapter.

We want to respect your information and ask you to vote “yes” or “no” to allow the release of this information to Hilltop Public Solutions. Please do so by next Friday, 11/14/14. Should you have any questions about IDC-Oregon, Hilltop Public Solutions or political mapping, please contact Vice President of Advocacy, Roberta Pennington, IIDA at roberta-pennington@clear.net

Please take a moment to vote YES or NO by clicking here.

November Forum preview + Call to furniture manufacturers!

Watch this video for a sneak preview of the November Forum, BIFMA LEVEL Sustainability and Furniture.

Martin Flaherty, BIFMA’S contract marketing and communications strategist will be giving an overview of LEVEL, and explaining why the program is often compared to being like a LEED certification for furniture.

Psst….Do you rep a product line that is LEVEL certified? Help us promote the importance of this program and educate designers on your product!

Take these 3 easy steps:

1. Tweet us @IIDA_Oregon, post to our Facebook page and Instagram account. Tag the name of your furniture manufacturer account, post a photo of a LEVEL certified furniture piece, and use the hashtags #BIFMA #LEVELstandard and #iidaor_forums.

2. Become an event sponsor for the Forum! Sponsorship benefits can include a vendor table to showcase your products (hopefully LEVEL certified products!), recognition at the event, website and in e-blasts, and complimentary tickets to the event!

3. Bring a designer date (or two) to the Forum! It’s FREE for members and lunch is on us! You can use your complimentary tickets from sponsoring to bring even more friends along! They will thank you for the free CEUs.

Announcing the 2014 Design Excellence Award Winners!

The Design Excellence Awards are an important platform that highlights the exceptional interior design work that is occurring in the Pacific Northwest.

Thank you to all of the designers who submitted inspiring projects and to those whom attended the Awards ceremony last Thursday. This was the inaugural year of online voting for the People’s Choice Award, and we are pleased to share that over 3,471 votes were cast from locations spanning the entire United States! The winning project (find out more below), received 1,418 votes! We are thrilled to see local interior design work being shared nationally, thank you for your help spreading the word.

Winners from the 2014 first Student Design Charrette that occurred last Spring were also announced, along with details for the upcoming 2015 Charrette on February 21st. The IIDA Oregon Chapter will host a local event and advance the winners to regional and national events. See photos of the winning student teams below and look for more details soon!

The winning projects will also be posted at iida-or.org and on the IIDA Oregon Chapter’s Pinterest board for continued sharing and promotion.

The Awards Ceremony concluded with a surprise charitable donation from the winning firm of the People’s Choice Award to The Dougy Center, the project client of the Against All Odds Award. What a heartwarming end to a great evening celebrating the power and impact of professional interior design!

Don’t forget to save the date for the Design Crawl in April 2015, when three of the Award-winning spaces will be selected for a guided tour!

Please join us in congratulating the designers and project teams of all of the award submissions!

OCTOBER 30, 2014

IIDA OREGON DESIGN EXCELLENCE AWARDS

Portland, OR – The International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Oregon Chapter is proud to present the 2014 Design Excellence Awards Winners, a juried competition for design excellence and innovation. Interior designers, architects and industrial designers from Oregon and SW Washington submitted entries for  interior environments within an architectural shell.

The Award winning projects were honored at an awards ceremony at the McMenamins Crystal Ball Room on October 23rd, 2014.  The three guest jurors used written and visual material for their analysis during a two day jury session leading up to the event, in which the moderator also participated. Submissions were judged for suitability to the project challenge, originality of the design solution, and the successful integration of planning, interior forms, finishes and furnishings.

All entries received additional exposure via online display and voting for the People’s Choice Award. Images of the award winning projects will be posted at iida-or.org and on the IIDA Oregon Chapter’s Pinterest page.

If you would like to feature one of the award winning projects, please contact the firm and request permission prior to publishing.

Three of all the award winning projects will be selected for a guided tour during the IIDA Oregon Chapter’s Design Crawl event in April, 2015.

Recap: 2014 Student Kick-off Events

Student Event2

The new school year is off to a great start! The IIDA Oregon Chapter fall student kick-off events were well attended by both students and professionals. The events coincided with the first couple of weeks of classes to strengthen our connection to students studying interior design.  We held two separate events, a ‘local’ event in Portland and a ‘state’ event in Corvallis in the hopes of capturing students studying design throughout the state.

At the local event, students toured two projects in downtown Portland. The first tour was the recently completed Schnitzer Steel Industries corporate office design by GBD Architects. Insight from both the designer and client gave students the opportunity to hear multiple perspectives on the design process. The second tour met at the US Bancorp Tower. The lobby of the building is under construction, giving students a unique opportunity to see how a space can be revitalized, how finish materials are installed, and how a large renovation is phased.

At the state event, students met on the Oregon State University Campus.  Boora Architects presented the design and plan for a new classroom building that is focused on active learning.  Following the presentation, students were able to tour the site and witness the construction process as how the uniquely designed classrooms are taking form.

Student Event5

Both events ended with snacks and networking, a presentation about the benefits of IIDA membership and how the Student Affairs Committee can be a resource to Oregon’s design students! Thank you to all who contributed to the events!
